A
BIT ABOUT GOLF:
The Santa Ynez Valley is fast becoming as much of a golf mecca as resorts like Palm Springs and Monterey, but on a miniature scale. This is due, in great part, to the Alisal Guest Ranch and Resort. After 142 years of successful livestock raising, the Alisal continues, not only as a working ranch, but in 1946 also opened as a dude ranch where guests could enjoy the solitude of ranch life. The Alisal's private course is a challenging 18 holes, tight in a way, with verdant fairways bordered by Western Sycamores, oaks, and eucalyptus that sometimes come into play. Not long, it is a par 72 and has just undergone a complete makeover. In
1994 a new 18 hole 6,855 yard public links, "The River Course" reflects
the Old West atmosphere of the nearby "ranch" course. The two are
separated by the Santa Ynez River. For information on the River
Course, call 688-6042. Bordering the Lompoc Valley, west of Buellton, is the championship La Purísima Golf Course situated on 300 acres of gently rolling hills. The expansive fairways on the par 72 course are surrounded by large stands of majestic oak trees and vistas of the La Purísma Hills. Call (805) 735-8395. |
